How to Get Involved

I’ve just heard: “I’m sorry; you have cancer.”
If you or a loved one is living with cancer give us a call, browse our website or visit us at LivingWell Cancer Resource Center, part of Northwestern Medicine. We are here to assist you from diagnosis to living well. All of our services are provided at no charge to the people who use our services. But our services aren’t free. They are made available through the generosity of volunteers and financial contributors who believe as we do, that living well despite having cancer is important to all of us.

I’ve got a passion to help:
If you or a loved one has been touched by cancer, it’s impossible not to be passionate about LivingWell’s mission. For us to make these much-needed resources available at “no charge” we must rely on the generosity and understanding of people who care.

If you can volunteer your time, we can use you to make a positive difference for people living with cancer. If you can contribute your professional expertise, we can use you to deliver meaningful information and resources to people living with cancer. And all of us who know the importance of LivingWell can support its mission financially. Please contact us at info@livingwellcrc.org to get involved.

Living Well is completely free of charge. We function entirely through the generous support of individuals, corporations and foundations.

We welcome and value gifts of every size, and since Living Well is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, all gifts are fully tax-deductible as provided by law.

Volunteer Information

Volunteers are vital to the daily operations at LivingWell – allowing us to offer our programs and services free of charge to cancer patients and their families and/or caregivers.  Our volunteers are the backbone of our organization, and often the first contact a cancer survivor has with our organization.  High School Students are welcome! Volunteers are always needed in a variety of roles, including:

Front Desk/Reception – Answer telephones, greet and direct participants as they arrive for programs/services, register participants for programs, and other administrative tasks as they come up.  4- hour Morning, afternoon, and evening shifts available.

Clinical Therapists/Support Group Facilitators – Experienced social workers and counselors who would like to volunteer to facilitate a weekly or monthly support group or serve as substitute facilitators.

Snack Makers – Bring in your favorite treats or use our kitchen to prepare refreshments for our program participants.

Ambassador Program – Train with LivingWell staff on how to represent LWCRC in the community: area health fairs, speaking before local civic organizations, etc.

Fitness/Yoga Instructors – Volunteers who are qualified and interested in teaching mind/body fitness classes are needed and appreciated.

Massage Therapists – Licensed massage therapists who would like to volunteer an occasional morning or afternoon would be appreciated at LivingWell.

Sheet Washers – Wash and dry sheets for massage tables.

Special Event Volunteers – Volunteers are needed for special fundraising events, special participant events,  and  LivingWell awareness events.

Join an Event

LivingWell hosts two annual fundraisers each year to help support our mission. Volunteers are the back bone to the planning and organization and vital to the success of these events. Whether you are 16 or 60, we all have special “gifts” just waiting to be shared in a variety of rolls needed to plan these two events.

Our 11th Annual Winter Benefit will be held on Saturday, February 20th, 2016, location to be announced. The event will offer lavish hors d’oeuvres and unique and interesting wines and cocktails to its guests. A committee of 20 to 30 volunteers coordinates this distinctive cocktail party and they kick-off the planning 5 months prior to the event. There is a committee to secure sponsorships, invitations, wine, music & flowers and raffle & auction items. You may volunteer on the planning committee or volunteer the night of the event by helping with coat-check, registration, serving, the live auction or set-up and clean-up.

On Saturday, May 14th, 2016, our 11th Annual 5K BridgeWalk along the Fox River teams up thousands of individuals, family and friends, churches and schools, civic and service groups to raise money and awareness for LivingWell.

A committee of 20 to 40 volunteers work together to coordinate this very special morning event. There are a variety of tasks associated with this volunteer team including; “team recruitment,” corporate sponsorship, securing food, snacks, beverages and entertainment; and assisting in the planning of the logistics, kids tent and the survivor tent.

You may volunteer on the planning committee of the Bridge Walk or volunteer the week of the event. The week of the event, we need volunteers to organize t-shirts, stuff participant packets, help with set-up and tear-down tasks, registration, and support the water stations and the walk route.

So please come join us and be a part of our LivingWell family of volunteers!
